Future Forum Members Highlight Issues Important to Young Americans in Los Angeles

As part of the August district work period, Future Forum Vice-Chair U.S. Rep. Jimmy Gomez, D-Calif., hosted Future Forum Chair U.S. Rep. Stephanie Murphy, D-Fla., in Los Angeles to meet with local immigrant rights advocates, learn more about the music industry, and discuss the best way to engage young voters on the issue of gun violence.
The two Members of Congress visited the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN) – a community-based organization that provides education, enrichment, and leadership development programs for children and young adults – where they shared their personal stories with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients and activists. Congressman Gomez, a son of Mexican immigrants, and Congresswoman Murphy, a refugee from Vietnam, emphasized the importance of embracing their immigrant roots and encouraged young activists to continue voicing the value that immigrant communities contribute to the United States.
Congressman Gomez and Congresswoman Murphy also visited Warner Music Group's new office space in the Arts District. During their visit, they toured the facility and participated in a roundtable with the organization's leaders about the role of the music industry in shaping Los Angeles' creative landscape and bringing new employment opportunities to young Americans across the country.
The members also discussed their efforts to pass gun violence prevention legislation, including their support for H.R. 8, a bill to implement universal background checks on gun purchases.
"I'm glad my friend and colleague Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy was able to spend time in California's 34th Congressional District, one of the youngest and most culturally diverse districts in the country," said Gomez. "As leaders of the Future Forum – a group of young Democratic members of Congress focused on opportunities for younger Americans – it was essential for us to meet with Gen Z and Millennial students from a wide array of backgrounds to better understand their unique perspectives on issues that are important to them. I'd like to thank Congresswoman Murphy for taking the time to join me as we met with members of my community and provided them a platform to voice their concerns and share their vision for our country's future."
"Young Americans are the future of this country and their voices must be amplified in the halls of Congress," said Murphy. "This begins by listening and engaging with millennial and Gen Z Americans where they are. That's why I'm grateful to Congressman Gomez for hosting me in Los Angeles to engage with young activists and entrepreneurs in his vibrant district who are helping shape and inform policy as it relates to immigration, jobs and the creative industry. I look forward to continuing to work with Rep. Gomez and other Future Forum members on these issues in Washington."
Future Forum is a generational caucus of young House Democrats who focus on issues and opportunities important to young Americans. Since its inception, the caucus has visited more than 50 cities to engage with millennial and Gen Z Americans where they live, work, and go to school on issues important to them.
